I know that my current place of work would have been extremely nervous if they knew that I was blogging about MPOW issues. That's the reason why I haven't had many MPOW posts in the last year - also the fact that it's such a specialized job that such posts would have had very little appeal to a general audience, librarians or otherwise.
And what is a blogger to do when things in the workplace aren't going so great? It happens. One way is to vent in an anonymous venting blog. The most dangerous response would be to vent in your named blog. In the end, I just decided that if I didn't have anything nice to say, I wouldn't say anything at all. I've been out of library school for 8 years now. One of the things I've learned about the workplace is that it's a bad idea to knowingly and deliberately do something which will piss off your employer. If there's something bothering you in a workplace, change it if it is possible - otherwise learn to accept it or find somewhere else to work.
I am thrilled to say that I have found a new place of work. I'll probably reveal more details later on, especially in this bunker blog, but it's in an academic library for a business school. For me this is the best of several worlds: I get to tinker with the library system and do corporate research, things I enjoy and which are useful skills to have, as well as be in the academic environment. I am also stoked that this is an actual systems library position (with some reference and web work responsibilities).
And what of the place that will soon be MFPOW (my former place of work)? There are some cutting-edge issues concerning that which I could write about. I may write about some of them, but if I do, I'll still be very discreet about the whole thing. Having just been on a job search (my shortest and easiest one ever - yay!), I have been much more self-conscious about my blogging and how it could impact on that, in positive and negative ways. It would have been a huge negative for me to have trashed a former employer on my blog. If a prospective employer had seen such a thing, he or she would be right to wonder, will Morgan eventually write similar things about us when he's moved on? The answer is a definite no, I don't use my blog for such things.
