Posting from Word 2007

I have no particular love for Microsoft, but I'm always curious about new software. I managed to obtain a discounted version of Office 2007 for my work computer. It is quite different, and I haven't had the time to really familiarize myself with it. But I have been experimenting a little with the blog posting features. It seems to work quite well with TypePad. If they'd had this for the Mac Office 2004, I'd be more interested, but even so it's a step in the right direction. Too bad there's no preview function for posts.

I will suspend my dislike of labels such as Library 2.0 / L2 for just a moment. Librarians' first efforts on the internet were like crude boats. The next step, the L2 step, is where we learn how to swim. One day, not in my lifetime, we'll develop gills.

chaos and order are relative

To backtrack a little, I think that chaos and order are relative terms. I don’t think that today’s tools for finding online information outside the library are inherently chaotic, but they are chaotic when compared with the old fashioned library. Every last detail of that library was built according to a design, every item had its place determined by an ordering system.

It’s different on the internet. Information exists wherever it happened to grow. It’s not organized, rather it’s mapped, so it can be effectively navigated.
