This is the same conversation we’ve been having since the whole ‘there are no academic librarians blogging’ fiasco from the summer. It seems some folks want our personal blogs to be 100% professional. (’Professional’, as Dorothea would have it.) Let’s not fall into this trap. We don’t owe the world a purely professional blog on our own time. ...

I had not been following the fangirl kerfuffle at all, but Rochelle's post and particularly this portion resonated. The world didn't ask me to be a blogger. It certainly doesn't pay me to blog. So far as I see it, my only duty as a blogger is to do whatever the hell I want. I'll act responsibly only because I choose to, not out of any sense of duty. Some days I'll be an unprofessional ranter, contributing to the din of the echo chamber. Other days I'll write something insightful and unique - or at least that's the aim.
